Nellie Brown letters, 1856-1865.

Seven letters with typed transcriptions written by Nellie Brown and her husband Benjamin Jones Brown from Saint Anthony (Sept. 28, 1856), Swan River (Jan. 8, 1857), Crow Wing (Apr. 26, 1858), Rosemount (Apr. 18 and 21, 1863), Mendota (Jan. 20, 1864), and Minneapolis (Aug. 1, 1865) to her sister-in-law Polly Brown in China, Maine. The letters tell about their marriage, children, health, weather, and work. The letters also express thanks for gifts sent by Polly and inquire about family members and acquaintances.

Nellie Edythe Shepard Brown was born in 1891 and died at the age of 86 in 1978. She married John "Jack" Brown in 1912 and soon after their marriage they settled in Ship Creek. They were the first to permanently settle on the future site of Anchorage, Alaska. Nellie extensively traveled Alaska by train and went to World Fairs in New York, San Francisco, and Chicago.
